About
India has one of the largest road network in the world with and estimated over 2.5 million km of roads. Of this only a little over 40% is paved. The importance of these roads can be deduced from the fact that they carry an estimated 60% of total freight & 80% of total passenger traffic in India. this makes them a vital link to India’s fast growing economy.
The road traffic in India contains a very peculiar mix of pedestrians, animals, man driven rickshaws, animal drawn vehicles, bicycles, motorcycles, three wheelers, cars, buses & trucks. In a nutsheel the facilities are very poor for a large number of non-motorized road users and vehicles using the roads. This results in a terrible toll on human life, killing over 100,000 people every year in road related accidents. Over 400,000 victims require hospital treatment.
The road accidents not only result in suffering and hardship for victims but they also have major impact on the Indian economy (according to an estimate almost 3% of India’s GDP every year).
